Linhurst was built in approximately 1909 and had an extensive facelift in 2019. Many original features were uncovered and retained including the wooden floors and high pitched ceilings. Her original name was restored in 2016 as soon as it was discovered on a Winnipeg Beach 1915 Fire Map.
In 1943, during WWII, Linhurst was requisitioned by the Canadian Government and became lodging for aircrew of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan at RCAF Gimli. The cottage was divided into 3 separate living quarters with 3 entrances (all of which still exist) and 3 wood stoves. Trained in Gimli were airmen from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
Next door to Linhurst is Cornercopia which also was built prior to 1915. Her original name on the Winnipeg Beach 1915 Fire Map was Oshawa and was named Rockaway on the 1925 Winnipeg Beach Cottage Name Map. She was named Cornercopia in 2014 after she was lucky enough to find a new owner who loved her beauty and history and worked at keeping and enhancing that until her untimely passing in 2020.
Cornercopia was chosen as it is a cute play on words and the meaning was derived from Cornucopia (a horn containing food, drink etc. in endless supply), Corner (a place where two roads intersect) and Copia (a great abundance of something). Linhurst and Cornercopia are now forever linked by two families that became one and for that we are extremely grateful.
Here’s to another 100 years!
Here are some before and after reno photos of the two properties.
